Isola d’Elba

Isola d’Elba is a small island of the west coast of Italy near Livorno and famous for being the home of Napoleon during his exile from France. Vicky, Jim and I have just had three days there and it was well worth the visit.

The ferry from Piombino to Portoferraio takes 3/4 hour making it possible to do a day trip if time was limited.

Arriving into Portoferraio offers a lovely view of the port.

We stayed in Campo di Marina which is on the coast in the middle of the south of the island – a great place to base ourselves.

Most of the West coast is a national park and the drive along the coast around the south and up the west side of the island offers beautiful views accross the mediterranean to Corsica.

Further exploring uncovered the lovely town of Capoliveri on the south east side of the island.

We made our way to Porto Azzurra which is half way up the east coast. Very lovely village and where we had lunch.

Travelling further north we passed through Rio Nell’Elba and Rio Marina where we saw the remains of the iron ore industry that was once an island export.

The island is very mountainous and the scenery is every changing, including gum trees over most of the island.

Along the north coast of the island we visited Marciana Marina on the coast, Poggio and Marciana which are villages up in the mountains.

We returned to Portoferraio for a final look around before heading home.

Leaving the island behind in the late afternoon we returned to the mainland with the sun dancing on the beautiful Mediterranean.

Lunch with the Campbells turned into a 2.00 am gig…bit seedy the next day I can tell you…not sure how the big fella pulled up…will send you a photo

    • OMG…disgraceful, but wish we were there!!!!!

  2. Great photos and article! We have not been to the island, but we will certainly visit it. Thanks for the advice!

    • Well worth the visit to the island. You need a couple of days to see it all.

    Regards Julie T xx

    • Yes we are having a great time Julie.

  4. One of the most magical days I spent in Italy (really ever) was a day driving around with guide Roberto Bechi on a perfect late summer day on Elba. He introduced us to Andrea Bocelli (not yet a household name then). Something about the music, the blue sky, the sparkling sea, the landscape… I kept tearing up as we drove at the joy of such perfection. Thanks for giving me a reminder glimpse.

    • Glad you enjoyed see Elba again.

  5. Reblogged this on Bella Bagni di Lucca and commented:
I have not been to Elba…but Jim and Kerry have. They have written a great post about this nearby island. I hope they inspire you to visit.

    • Thanks Deb. The weather was great and we had a great time.
